This is the last in my series of adventures from before the holiday. As you may recall, my week included an ambivalent auction, an estate sale I visited multiple times, and the three-times-a-year Kutztown Extravaganza.
Let me give you a little background on the Kutztown thing. We have been attending for over twenty years (even longer for my hubby). Mr. VJIMT always takes the day off from work and goes on opening day Thursday. I haven't gone as often lately as it conflicts with my part-time work schedule and the availability of a summertime baby sitter.
Throughout the years, we have gotten tons of serious good stuff. And it was fun to walk around in amazement at all of the other good stuff we couldn't afford. For the last couple of years, though, we have been disappointed by the underwhelming (to us) selection and the dwindling number of vendors.
I know there are other bloggers and collectors who love this extravaganza, and maybe we're just jaded old-timers*, but sometimes it feels as if we have better stuff leftover in our “barn”. I do think that adds to it; we've been doing this for so long it feels like we've seen (and bought!) it all before.
* No worries; Bouckville still gets our hearts racing and our temperatures rising!
So on that K-town Thursday, throw in some major thunderstorms and heavily congested roads, and Mr. VJIMT decided to forgo the trip and work on a home project we had recently discussed. It was a fairly spur-of-the-moment remodeling decision.
This is our kids' bathroom. It has remained completely unchanged (except for the paint color) for the 16 years we have lived here. I've always despised the modern vanity, but it had been newly installed by the previous owners and I couldn't justify a change.
Ugh, look at that horrible mirror cut to fit the funky space. I didn't even take a before photo of the vanity since it was so unattractive. Just think early 1990s faux marble and you get the picture.
But NOW seemed like a good time. I had off-handedly mentioned to Mr. VJIMT that I love the look of an old dresser converted into a vanity and he was immediately on it! (Remember, stand still too long and you will be painted!)
And that stuff in the “barn” that I mentioned? Right before our sale, I noticed a dresser that would be perfect as a vanity. It was the right size, had a great shape, and was a lovely color.
Plus the crackle! Drooling!
Mr. VJIMT cut away space for the sink and the pipes.
Look how uneven our floor is (and it's definitely the floor, and not the dresser)-- see the level bubble?!
Mr. VJIMT shored the dresser up with a little piece of wood under one foot, painted and distressed to match -- you can't even tell.
This project only took a few hours. I think he should do it as a side business!
Jealously awaiting the finale! I've been wanting to do this for the LONGEST time, but my bath is so tiny I can't find the right piece. I've got loads of good pieces for OTHER people. I'm thinking of putting them on Craigslist, since no one at the shop gets it.
Gina, dumb question: are y'all going to Bouckville again? I'm waffling (only bec. of the gas consumed). Let's chat. I'll email you!
